Feeling Stuck This Winter? Small Shifts That Can Help You Feel More Like Yourself Again

By Tracey Ropp & Erin House

By the time winter is fully underway, many people notice a subtle but persistent shift. The holidays are over. The excitement and anticipation have faded. Spring feels far away. Life hasn’t fallen apart, but it also doesn’t feel quite right.

In our work with clients, we often hear people describe this season as heavy, flat, or stuck. You may have leaned into rest and hibernation earlier in the winter, and that likely served a purpose. But now, the coziness that once felt comforting might feel more like stagnation.

If part of you knows you want things to feel different but you don’t know where to start, you’re not alone. And no, this isn’t about forcing motivation or setting another New Year’s resolution that quickly loses steam.

Why Winter Can Leave Us Feeling Off

Winter brings real changes to our routines, energy levels, and nervous systems. Shorter days, colder weather, and fewer spontaneous social moments all affect how we feel. On top of that, many people enter winter already tired from busy schedules, caregiving responsibilities, academic pressure, or workplace stress.

When we don’t feel energized, we often wait to feel motivated before making changes. The problem is that motivation usually comes after action, not before it. So we stay stuck, telling ourselves we’ll do something different once we feel more like ourselves again.

A Gentle Reframe: Momentum Comes From Doing, Not Deciding

One of the most helpful shifts we explore with clients is letting go of the idea that change has to be big or perfectly planned. Instead, we focus on just-right action.

Trying something new, or reconnecting with something familiar, can spark energy and curiosity even when motivation is low. This isn’t about reinventing your life. It’s about introducing a small movement forward that reminds your nervous system you’re not stuck forever.

Think of it less as a resolution and more as an experiment.

How to Figure Out What Might Help You Feel Unstuck

If you’re thinking, I know I need something different, but I don’t know what, here are a few reflective starting points we often use in counselling:

Reconnect with what once felt enjoyable
What did you gravitate toward as a child or teenager, just for fun? Creative expression, movement, building things, learning, being with people? You don’t need to return to it in the same way. Even a small modern version can be meaningful.

Check in with your values
Values are the qualities that matter most to you, such as connection, creativity, growth, kindness, stability, or curiosity. When life feels flat, it’s often because we’re living far from our values, not because we’re doing something wrong. Ask yourself which value feels most neglected right now and what a tiny step toward it could look like.

Notice what you’ve been longing for
If responsibilities weren’t a factor, what would you want more of? Rest, novelty, learning, play, connection, quiet? Instead of dismissing that longing, ask how a smaller version could fit into your current life.

Practical Examples for Real Life

For busy professionals, this might mean signing up for a short workshop, taking a weekly lunchtime walk somewhere new, or setting aside time to read something purely interesting rather than productive.

For parents, it might look like returning to a creative hobby once a week, involving your children in something playful you enjoyed growing up, or carving out brief, protected time that’s just yours.

For students, it could be trying a new club without pressure to commit long-term, learning something unrelated to your current courses or program, or reconnecting with movement or art that helps you feel more like yourself.

The key is to keep it small. This is not something else to add to an already full plate. It’s a slight shift in direction.

How Counselling Can Help When You Feel Stuck

Sometimes feeling stuck is about more than winter blues. It can be tied to burnout, life transitions, stress, low mood, or a sense of disconnection from yourself.

In counselling, we create a safe and confidential space to explore what’s underneath that stuck feeling. Together, we can talk about what hasn’t been working, clarify how you want things to feel, and gently imagine what feeling more like yourself could look like. We also work collaboratively to develop practical strategies that fit your real life, not an idealized version of it.

A Gentle Encouragement as Winter Continues

If winter has you feeling flat or off, that doesn’t mean you’re failing or doing something wrong. It may simply be a sign that something small needs to shift.

Change doesn’t require certainty or confidence. It often starts with curiosity and one small step.

If you’re ready to explore what feeling unstuck could look like for you, we’re here to help.
